Sorry that I haven’t posted in a while, but my church doesn’t want me posting in a blog. They feel that it …

Hmm?

They think that…

Hmm…

Well, you see, it is like this:

Did you read my previous post? Well, it seems that I was asked to sit in the office while being accused of seeing this guy in December, but the truth was that they had everything all backwards. But when I post things like that in my blog… well… When I post anything in my blog that is in the least bit creative, things get blown way out of proportion and then, I get accused of things.

I like my blog and having creative license over it.

I plan to post more here soon. :)

The reason?

I have so much to share!

And writing makes me feel better, and I missed having an outlet for my emotions. :)

So hang tight, people! I will return!

I don’t know why I never caught the connection. I mean, I should understand what it is that I’m going to school for, but sometimes you just end up having one of those moments where there seems to be some sort of disconnect in the thought process.

Here is the dilemma: View full article »

I know that I said I wasn’t going to post everything in one post, but to be honest, I have not found the time to sit down and write. Trying to squeeze this in while trying to finish so many things and prepare for this weekend is pushing my limits. So the only thing that I know to do- before I forget what it is that I wanted to say- is to post everything  in one post. View full article »

It seems so surreal. I had every intention of walking into the Division Chair’s office and laying it on the line that I am scared. I’m terrified in this shifting economy where teachers are being let go and no one is being hired. So what do you do?

I knew immediately that I needed to make myself more marketable. I’m not an idiot. I’m a person who has been around and I have a lot of experience under my belt. I know what sells and how to sell myself. I knew that to compete in such a tough market, I needed an edge. View full article »

South Carolina has a serious issue right now, although it is not alone. Other states across the United States share this same issue. The issue is education.

Despite what many may think, education is not funded under the federal system. It is controlled and funded in part by each state, which in turn sends accountability reports back to the federal government.

Due to the economic downturn we have been experiencing, school budgets here in South Carolina have taken a beating. This has led to teacher and school staff cutbacks in many counties across South Carolina. With so many educators being forced out of the education system, new college graduates must feel the pressure.

Students who have not graduated yet are changing majors to reflect this economic crisis. However, according to a recent article, this creates a problem later on down the road in 5 to 7 years when teachers retire and there becomes a shortage.

My question is “What about now?”

I will graduate in December 2011. Will I have a job?

Unlike my younger colleagues who can move and start life anew, I cannot. Another student who is a dear friend of mine graduated last week with no job prospects. We have the same major: English Education. Just like me, this friend has a family already established in the area along with a home. Who can sell a home in this market, uproot their family, and move for what may or may not be a promising prospect for a job?

It is questionable how educators can teach for so little money (starting pay in S.C. is around $32K). If you consider the amount of time required for the job, teachers make on average $3/hour. They are dedicated to their job.

What does South Carolina do to try and “salvage” teacher jobs? They freeze their pay and tell them, “No bonuses.” Then, they start “letting the teachers go.” How many have to be “let go” and how many times are you going to freeze their pay? You need to start looking into the budget deficits. You already have schools who do not meet AYP. What does this say about reduction in teachers, increase in student to teacher ratio?

And Andre Bauer thinks the problem is with the poor on reduced and free lunches. Yeah, Mr. Bauer, you just keep telling yourself that.

Today is the day…

I keep saying it, but do I really mean it?

Today is the day that I’m going to do this differently.  Today is the day that I will complete this task.  Today is the day…

It goes on and on, but at some point in time I must realize that today is the day.  So today is the day for View full article »

I’m not a big fan of our dear South Carolina Lt. Governor Andre Bauer.  I did not vote for him, I have not voted for him and even though I usually vote Republican, if he’s on a ticket, I’ll vote Democrat just to keep from voting for him.  Of course, it is the same way with Lindsay Graham, but we won’t get into all that.  My most recent disgust with Lt. Gov. Bauer is a remark that he made at a recent Townhall meeting where he actually compares the impoverished of the great state of South Carolina to stray animals.  You can read the article here:  http://www.greenvilleonline.com/article/20100123/NEWS/1230308/-1/rss  Of course, when they gave him a chance to clear up his remarks, he didn’t do much along the lines to help himself.

Many of his remarks just do not hold water.  Sure, there are lower test scores in schools that have a higher number of students on Free and Reduced Lunch, but Lt. Gov. Bauer, have you been into those areas or are you basing your facts on a demographics report?  Some of these poorer areas have students who are being raised by grandparents who do not read or write.  Some of these areas, if the parents do work, they are not available to help students with their homework or attend Parent/Teacher conferences, because doing so means they may be out on the street.

But there is also one very important remark that you made that has me, a future educator, very upset.  I know that South Carolina is trying to pass a law to deny benefits to those who cannot pass a drug test.  In a way, I cannot say I blame S.C., but to take away food from the children?  Who wins if you take away Free and Reduced lunch?  I guess the State of South Carolina, because that would mean less money the state is handing out, but the kids lose!  Some of the kids on the lunch program only eat when they are at school!  So I suppose that South Carolina’s newest plan to save some money is to starve children to the point of death, right?

Bauer, seriously, sometimes you need to keep your opinions to yourself.  You would think that a man who intends to run for Governor of our state would try not to offend his voters.  I know you were only voted in because they all felt sorry for you after your back to back misfortunes, but calling the people of this state “stray animals” that you need to “stop feeding” so they’ll “stop breeding” in a state where the unemployment rate is extremely high, and businesses are closing is just plain stupidity!

The very condition of our state has been in a constant decline since the textile mills began closing starting in the 1980’s.  These textile mills housed hundreds of employees and considering the number of people employed in these manufacturing plants that were dumped out in the work force unexpectedly;  I’m surprised that the unemployment rate has not been higher.  However, the economy has also steadily declined over the last 20 years and even the additions of huge companies moving into the state could not place a dent into the already stressed unemployment situation.

There is a great need to overhaul many aspects here in South Carolina.  Sure test rates are low, but you need to find out why, not blame low income families.  What are you wanting to do, just remove all poor people out of the state instead of remedying the problem?  What about the roads in our state?  They are deplorable!  I have never seen such poorly maintained road conditions in all my life!  Yet, SCDOT seems to have the funds to close off an entire stretch of I-385 from I-26 and up to repair.  As a citizen of this state, I demand to know where the money is being spent!  I want to see how my tax dollars are benefitting this state.

One thing for certain, something has to change!  It is just a matter of who is going to make that change.  You, Lt. Governor Bauer?  I think not!  I think you have done enough damage.  It is time for the citizens of South Carolina to become informed voters.  It is time for them to use their voice and call for something more than what we’ve had in the past.
